Van Halen

Van Halen is an American heavy metal/hard rock band formed on the West Coast in 1972. Van Halen has been very successful since their formation, but may be better known for the considerable drama surrounding the frequent entrances and exits of former band members. The multiple exits of both lead singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar were all surrounded in controversy and mass press coverage with various contrasting press statements between the former singers and the band. The band originally was composed of Eddie and Alex Van Halen, lead guitarist and drummer respectively, Mark Stone as bass guitarist and David Lee Roth as lead vocalist. Shortly after their formation, in 1974 the band decided to replace Stone with Michael Anthony.

In 1977 Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS heard them play and after only hearing two songs offered to fly them to New York and get them in the studio to start recording some of their genius work. They produced a 13 song demo tape. They finally released their first, self-titled, album Van Halen that debuted at #19 on the Billboard pop music charts, one of rock’s most successful debut albums in history. It includes the classic Van Halen songs “Runnin’ with the Devil” and Eddie Van Halen’s guitar solo “Eruption”. The band toured the following year with Black Sabbath. They developed their own flamboyant style with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar mastery and wizardry and David Lee Roth’s antics. This conflict ultimately turned them into rivals. Ultimately in 1985 Roth left Van Halen to pursue a solo music career and a movie career. Sammy Hagar replaced Roth and recorded albums for the next ten years. In 1996 Hagar quit (as Eddie Van Halen would say) or was fired (as Hagar would put it). Either way there was a temporary reunion with Roth later that year. They would reunite with Hagar in 2003-2005, and again with Roth from 2006-2009.

As of 2007, Van Halen has sold over 80 million albums worldwide, and have had the most number-one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. During the 1980s they also had more Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other hard rock or heavy metal band. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is the 19th best selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albumins in the United States alone. They are also one of only five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than ten million copies in the United States. In 1999, the RIAA certified Van Halen Diamond, for ten million U.S. sales which was a great way to carry on the legacy.
